What it is Filled

A map product is a published cartographic output, printed or digital, that portrays geographic data for a stated area, scale and purpose, such as a map sheet, map series, chart or tiled web map. The underlying geospatial dataset, a single feature and an earth observation image without cartographic design are outside the class.

In scope

  • Product identity, purpose, edition and series bindings
  • Extent, spatial reference applicability, scale context, theme selection, style and legend
  • Source revisions, content currency, production lineage and use-specific quality evidence
  • Distribution references, permissions, release assertions, corrections and retirement

Out of scope

  • Mastering geographic features, datasets, imagery acquisitions or coordinate reference definitions
  • Running rendering services, geodetic transformations, tile generation, routing or external publication
  • Managing the independent lifecycle of series, publishers, licences, source systems or physical printed copies
  • Certifying navigation, emergency, cadastral or other regulated use; specialist chart profiles remain deferred

Why it exists Filled

Published cartographic products with area, scale, projection, sources and edition.

Distinguishing features Filled

  • A designed portrayal for a scale and purpose, while a geospatial dataset holds the features themselves.
  • Identified by series, sheet and edition, so an outdated edition still belongs to the same product line.
  • Includes official nautical and aeronautical charts, whose currency matters for safety.
  • Distinct from earth observation products, which deliver imagery or measurements without cartographic generalization.

What robots and AI may and may not do Filled

Must not

  • Present an outdated or unofficial chart as fit for navigation.
  • Remove attribution or redistribute a map against its licence.
  • Alter a published map and present it as the original edition.
  • Combine map layers to reveal locations that the publisher restricted for safety or security.

Only with a human decision

  • Approving a map for navigation, emergency or legal use.
  • Publishing a map that shows disputed boundaries or sensitive sites.

May

  • Identify a map by publisher, series, sheet and edition.
  • Report a map's scale, extent, projection and currency date.
  • Check whether a newer edition or correction supersedes the one in use.
  • Use map content within its licence terms.

Moral aspects Filled

  • Outdated or wrong maps can lead people into danger, especially at sea, in the air or in emergencies.
  • Maps shape how borders, territories and place names are perceived, and disputed areas need neutral handling.
  • Detailed maps can expose protected sites, vulnerable communities or critical infrastructure.

Who is affected

  • Navigators and travellers relying on the map
  • Communities named or represented on the map
  • Map publishers and data contributors

Owners Filled

Steward

The mapping agency or publisher that issues the map and maintains its editions.

Roles

Product steward
Resolve identity, scope, metadata completeness and revision conflicts.
Publisher authority
Supply scoped issue, correction, supersession and withdrawal evidence.
Cartographic reviewer
Review scale, reference context, portrayal and legend against the declared audience and profile.
Quality assessor
Provide revision-bound test evidence and distinguish measurement from suitability decisions.
Rights and exposure reviewer
Resolve reuse terms, attribution, restricted views and disclosure decisions.
Records custodian
Apply retention and lawful disposal policies through authorized external processes.
Model agent
Read and populate authorized local records, preserve unknowns and propose changes; never infer external release or certification authority.

references

  • WM-DAT-001 - Candidate, optional source dataset binding at a pinned revision; retains selection parameters only. Dataset feature content and lifecycle remain target-owned.
  • WM-EAR-009 - Candidate, optional imagery source binding. An EO-derived cartographic output may carry both applicable profiles, but acquisition and processing-level history are not copied into Map Product.
  • wm-dat-001-dataset - A map product portrays one or more geospatial datasets.

composes

  • WM-XCT-033 - Candidate spatial-context binding when georeferencing applies; map-local footprint and CRS references only. Pin an adopted compatible profile before use. Schematic or unresolved maps require explicit applicability status.

aligned

  • https://www.w3.org/TR/2024/REC-vocab-dcat-3-20240822/ - Conceptual resource, distribution and version alignment. Select compatible classes in an adoption profile; do not force every portrayal or series to be a dataset or dataset series.
  • https://www.w3.org/TR/2013/REC-prov-o-20130430/ - Conceptual provenance alignment for generation, derivation and attribution; no implemented mapping or evidence-truth certification.

neighbor

  • Dataset (WM-DAT-001) - Reference source dataset identities and revisions. A portrayal can qualify for a dataset profile, but this model owns only its product-specific selection and presentation, not underlying feature edits.
  • EO Product (WM-EAR-009) - An imagery product may supply a map or overlap a cartographically designed output. Acquisition and processing level stay source-owned; image versus map is decided by declared product purpose and portrayal contract, not file format.
  • Geometry / Coordinate Reference (WM-XCT-033) - Store reference bindings and product-specific extents. CRS definitions and transformation algorithms remain external. Schematic or ungeoreferenced maps must state non-applicability or unknown context rather than inventing a projection.
  • Delivery service, map series and physical copy - Endpoint URLs are locators, series are grouping references, and print copies are manifestations. None substitutes for product or edition identity. No registered relation edge was found; all proposed bindings require adoption review.
  • wm-ear-009-eo-product - Earth observation products deliver imagery or measurements without cartographic design.

requires

  • wm-xct-033-geometry-coordinate-reference - Every map declares a coordinate reference system and projection.

What else AI and robots need to interact with it Filled

Identity and identifiers required Filled

  • Identified by publisher, series, sheet number and edition date, or by ISBN for published maps.
  • Digital map services are identified by service endpoint and layer names with a metadata record.

Direct properties not applicable Not applicable

Not applicable

A map product is an information product; its scale and accuracy are metadata, not physical measurements.

Recognition optional Filled

  • A map product carries a title, legend, scale, publisher and edition or date.
  • Often confused with the geospatial dataset it portrays or with a satellite image.

Capabilities and actions required Filled

  • Can be printed, served as tiles or delivered as a file for a defined area and scale.
  • Can be updated by new editions or published corrections.
  • Can be overlaid with other data when the reference system is known.

Hazards and failure modes required Filled

  • Navigation or rescue errors from outdated or uncorrected maps.
  • Misreading position because of an undeclared projection or datum.
  • Disclosure of sensitive locations through detailed portrayal.

Standards and interfaces required Filled

  • OGC Web Map Service and OGC Web Map Tile Service for map delivery.
  • ISO 19115 for geographic metadata of the map product.
  • IHO S-57 and S-101 for electronic nautical charts.

Context of use required Filled

  • Published by national mapping agencies, hydrographic offices, aviation authorities and commercial or community publishers.
  • Official charts for navigation follow international hydrographic and aviation rules.

Open questions

  • Run the supplied source checker outside the sandbox, inspect full applicable standards and errata, pin adopted versions and verify each implementation claim.
  • Develop nested instance schemas, controlled values, complete metadata profiles and executable edge-case fixtures for identity, geometry, quality, concurrency, permissions and disposition.
  • Commission qualified specialist review of safety-critical chart profiles, rights, exposure, accessibility and intended-use authority before operational adoption.
  • Restore independent external review before any canonical or publishable-draft promotion.
  • Executable nested schemas, controlled state vocabularies and refusal/concurrency fixtures are not implemented.
  • Full WMS, tile-matrix and SLD normative clause review and protocol acceptance tests remain incomplete.
  • Source payload rights, downstream licence compatibility, quality metrics and jurisdiction-specific responsibilities need qualified adoption review.
  • Nautical and aviation chart certification, dynamic map reproducibility, accessibility and specialist cartographic profiles need further evidence.
  • No independent provider result is admitted; live HTTP verification has not been performed.
