What it is Filled

A preference or personal profile is the set of choices a person states about how they want to be served, contacted or treated, such as language, accessibility needs, communication channels, interests and consent choices, held under the person's control. Declared preferences are its core; profiles inferred by others are recorded as inferences and are not the person's own statements.

Why it exists Filled

User-controlled preference context

Distinguishing features Filled

  • Held under the person's control: they state, change and withdraw their preferences.
  • Declared preferences are kept apart from inferred profiles made by others.
  • Distinct from the person record, its parent, which holds identity rather than choices.
  • Distinct from a contact point, which is an address or channel rather than a preference about its use.

What robots and AI may and may not do Filled

Must not

  • Present inferred attributes as preferences the person declared.
  • Infer sensitive traits such as health, religion or sexual orientation from behaviour.
  • Share or sell the profile beyond the person's permissions.
  • Use preferences to manipulate the person into choices against their interest.
  • Ignore a withdrawn consent or opt-out.

Only with a human decision

  • Changing a preference on the person's behalf without their direct instruction.
  • Sharing the profile with a new party.
  • Restoring a profile the person had deleted.

May

  • Apply a person's declared preferences when serving them.
  • Help a person view, edit, export and delete their profile.
  • Ask the person to confirm preferences that are old or unclear.
  • Share preferences with services the person has authorized.

Moral aspects Filled

  • Profiles enable personalization but also surveillance and manipulation.
  • People have rights to access, correct and erase their personal data.
  • Respecting accessibility and language needs is a matter of equal access.

Who is affected

  • The person whose profile it is
  • People with accessibility needs
  • Services that rely on the profile

Owners Filled

Steward

The person is the owner of their profile; services that hold copies act as controllers on the person's behalf.

Master systems

  • Customer preference and consent management systems
  • Personal data stores

What else AI and robots need to interact with it Filled

Identity and identifiers required Filled

  • A profile is identified by the holding service's profile identifier, linked to the person's account.
  • A consent record is identified by its consent receipt or record identifier.

Direct properties not applicable Not applicable

Not applicable

A preference profile is a set of statements and records, not a physical object with measurable properties.

Recognition optional Filled

  • A record of choices tied to a person and a service, with dates and a way to change them.
  • Often confused with a behavioural marketing profile, an account record or a contact point.

Capabilities and actions required Filled

  • Preferences can be stated, updated, exported and withdrawn by the person.
  • Services can read authorized preferences and adapt language, format, channel and content.

Hazards and failure modes required Filled

  • Leaked profiles exposing personal habits and sensitive choices.
  • Inferred profiles used for discrimination or manipulation.
  • Stale preferences applied after the person changed their mind.

Standards and interfaces required Filled

  • ISO/IEC TS 27560 consent record information structure.
  • Global Privacy Control and similar browser signals for opt-outs.
  • W3C Accessibility guidance and ISO/IEC 24751 for personal accessibility needs.

Context of use required Filled

  • Used by online services, public services, healthcare and assistive technology.
  • Personal data protection law governs collection, use and sharing.

Sources Filled
