What it is Filled

A scholarly publication is a work of research or scholarship made public through a recognized venue, such as a journal article, conference paper, monograph, chapter, preprint or thesis, with its authorship, review, version history and citations. It covers the work and its versions as published, not the underlying dataset, the research project or a general-interest article.

Why it exists Filled

A scholarly work with authorship, venue, review, citation and publication lifecycle.

Distinguishing features Filled

  • It passes through a scholarly venue with review or moderation, unlike a general web page or press article.
  • One work can exist in several versions, of which only one is the version of record.
  • Corrections and retractions are part of its record and change how it may be relied on.
  • Distinct from the dataset, software or project it reports on, which are separate records linked by citation.

What robots and AI may and may not do Filled

Must not

  • Cite a retracted work as valid evidence without stating the retraction.
  • Invent references, identifiers, authors or quotations.
  • Attribute authorship by name matching alone when author identifiers disagree.
  • Redistribute full texts beyond what their licence allows.
  • Present a preprint as peer reviewed.

Only with a human decision

  • Deciding on authorship disputes or misconduct allegations.
  • Issuing a correction or retraction.

May

  • Retrieve and cite publications with their persistent identifiers and version.
  • Report corrections, expressions of concern and retractions attached to a work.
  • Link a work to its authors, funders, data and software through identifiers.
  • Summarize open-access works while pointing to the version of record.

Moral aspects Filled

  • Fabricated or misattributed citations damage trust in research and the careers of the people named.
  • Retracted findings keep spreading when downstream users are not told.
  • Access barriers decide who can read and build on publicly funded research.

Who is affected

  • Authors and their institutions
  • Readers, including clinicians and policy makers
  • Publishers and editors
  • Research funders and the public

Owners Filled

Steward

The publisher or repository that holds the version of record answers for its metadata and status, with authors answering for content.

Master systems

  • Publisher content platform
  • Institutional or subject repository
  • DOI registration agency metadata
  • Bibliographic index

What else AI and robots need to interact with it Filled

Identity and identifiers required Filled

  • A publication is identified by a DOI, with ISBN for books and ISSN for the serial it appears in.
  • Authors are identified by ORCID iDs and institutions by organization identifiers.
  • Bibliographic databases such as PubMed assign their own record identifiers.

Direct properties not applicable Not applicable

Not applicable

A scholarly publication is an information work with no physical properties to measure.

Recognition required Filled

  • A publication shows a title, authors, venue, date and usually an identifier, abstract and reference list.
  • Often confused with a preprint of the same work, a conference abstract, a press release or a predatory venue imitating a journal.

Capabilities and actions required Filled

  • Works can be published, versioned, corrected, retracted, cited and indexed.
  • Metadata can be harvested and linked across publishers, repositories and indexes.

Hazards and failure modes required Filled

  • Spread of retracted or fabricated findings.
  • Fabricated citations generated by automated tools.
  • Licence breach through redistribution of closed texts.

Standards and interfaces required Filled

  • DOI metadata from registration agencies.
  • JATS for journal article markup.
  • OAI-PMH for harvesting repository metadata.

Context of use required Filled

  • Used across research, teaching, evidence-based practice and research assessment.
  • Publication ethics follow editorial guidance such as COPE, and funders may set open-access requirements.

Sources Filled

  1. ISO 26324 Information and documentation - Digital object identifier system (ISO)
  2. ANSI/NISO Z39.96 Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) (NISO)
