What it is Filled
A building in which cereal grain, chiefly barley, is steeped, germinated on floors or in vessels and then kiln-dried to produce malt for brewing, distilling and food, traditionally with a steeping cistern, long germination floors and a pyramid-roofed kiln, known in Polish as mielcuch; floor maltings were largely replaced by industrial pneumatic maltings in the twentieth century, and many historic malt houses survive as heritage buildings converted to other uses.
Why it exists Filled
Let an agent explain malt houses and the malting process, relay historical and modern forms from brewing and heritage sources, describe conversions and preservation, and distinguish malt houses from breweries and distilleries.
Distinguishing features Filled
- Steep, floor and kiln
- Distinctive kiln roofs

What robots and AI may and may not do Filled
Must not
- Run kilns or grain conveyors without confirming that people are clear.
- Allow grain dust to build up or ignore dust explosion controls.
- Send people into grain bins or steeping vessels without permit and rescue cover.
- Alter a listed historic malt house without consent.
Only with a human decision
- Confined space entry or hot work inside the malt house.
May
- Describe a malt house's history and use from heritage and public records.
- Monitor temperature, humidity and dust levels for the operator that authorized it.
Moral aspects Filled
- Grain handling brings risks of dust explosions, engulfment and suffocation for workers.
- Historic malt houses are industrial heritage valued by their communities.
