A composite statistic published by the United Nations Development Programme since 1990, devised with economist Mahbub ul Haq and drawing on Amartya Sen s capability approach, ranking countries on three dimensions, a long and healthy life measured by life expectancy, knowledge measured by mean and expected years of schooling, and a decent standard of living measured by gross national income per capita at purchasing power parity, combined since 2010 as a geometric mean on a scale from 0 to 1, with variants such as the Inequality-adjusted Human Development Index introduced in 2010; current values and rankings should be checked against the latest UNDP report.
